The Sol Foundation

Also known as: The Sol Foundation, Sol Foundation

The Stanford-adjacent think tank where the serious academic and policy work on UAP gets done — less interested in proving the phenomenon than in thinking through what its reality would mean.

Most of the UAP world is consumed by a single question: is it real? The Sol Foundation is interesting because it largely brackets that question and moves to the next one — if it is real, what does a society do about it? That shift, from evidence to implications, is its distinctive contribution.

What it was

The Sol Foundation was founded in August 2023 by Garry Nolan, a prominent Stanford immunologist who has examined alleged anomalous materials and physiological cases, together with the sociocultural anthropologist Peter Skafish. It is structured as an academic think tank, convening scholars, scientists, and former government officials to address the political, scientific, and philosophical dimensions of UAP rather than to hunt directly for craft.

Its public face is an annual symposium — the first held at Stanford in late 2023 — and a series of white papers on UAP policy. The roster of speakers and affiliates has included credentialed insiders such as retired colonel [[karl-nell]], who used a Sol platform to assert plainly that non-human intelligence is real, and figures like the physicist [[hal-puthoff]] from the field’s research lineage.

Why it matters

Sol matters as the academic and policy wing of the modern movement. Where [[to-the-stars-academy]] worked through media and the [[uap-task-force]] through national security, Sol works through the university seminar and the policy paper — lending the subject the cadence and credibility of scholarship, and asking governance questions (disclosure strategy, public reaction, even theological implications) that the evidence-focused efforts tend to skip.

That posture is also its vulnerability. Critics argue Sol risks putting the cart before the horse: building elaborate policy and philosophical frameworks atop a premise — that non-human intelligence is here — that remains unproven, and giving insider assertions an academic veneer they have not earned. Supporters respond that thinking ahead about consequences is prudent, not credulous, and that serious scholars engaging the topic is overdue regardless of how the evidence resolves.

For this field guide, the Sol Foundation represents the subject’s move into the academy. It shares the scholarly, data-respecting instinct of Avi Loeb’s [[galileo-project]] — but where Galileo points telescopes at the sky, Sol points seminars at the implications, betting that the harder problem is not detection but what comes after.
