Person
Col. Karl Nell
Also known as: Karl Nell, Karl E. Nell, Colonel Nell
A retired Army intelligence colonel who helped stand up the UAP Task Force — and then stated flatly, on the record, that non-human intelligence is real. A blunt claim from an unusually credentialed source.
What separates Karl Nell from most people who make extraordinary UAP claims is the dryness of his delivery and the weight of his résumé. He does not emote or speculate wildly; he states, in the flat cadence of a briefer, that non-human intelligence is real — and that flatness, from a man with his clearances, is exactly what makes him hard to dismiss.
Who he is
Nell is a retired U.S. Army colonel and career intelligence officer with a background in advanced technology and program management. Critically for this story, he served as the Army’s liaison to the [[uap-task-force]] during its 2020–2021 transition — placing him inside the official government effort at the moment it was being formalized, with access to the people and processes involved.
He is named, by [[david-grusch]], as one of the colleagues who can corroborate elements of his account, and Nell has publicly stated that Grusch’s allegations are, in his assessment, “fundamentally correct.”
Why he matters
Nell matters because of who is saying what. At the 2023 SALT iConnections conference and at the inaugural [[sol-foundation]] symposium, he asserted with unusual bluntness that there is “zero doubt” non-human intelligence has interacted with humanity, and he has spoken in terms of a coming, managed disclosure. Coming from a roadside witness, such claims are easy to file away; coming from a colonel who sat on the UAP Task Force transition, they force a harder question about what insiders believe they know.
The necessary caution is significant. Nell offers assertions, not evidence — no documents, no recovered hardware, no data the public can examine. His corroboration of Grusch is itself testimony, layered on Grusch’s testimony, and the whole edifice currently rests on the credibility of officials rather than on artifacts. Skeptics reasonably note that sincere belief, even among the credentialed, is not the same as proof.
For this field guide, Nell is a key figure in the [[sol-foundation]] wing of the movement — the academic-and-insider effort to think through the policy and philosophical consequences of the claim that we are not alone. He is the clearest example of a serving-era intelligence professional putting that claim, unhedged, on the public record.
