Cmdr. David Fravor
Also known as: David Fravor, Dave Fravor, Commander Fravor
The Navy fighter pilot who chased the Tic Tac. A Top Gun graduate and squadron commander whose firsthand account anchors the most credible UFO case of the modern era.
The strength of a witness is measured by what they have to lose. David Fravor — a Navy commander, Top Gun graduate, and squadron CO — had a career built entirely on accurately identifying what he saw in the sky. That is why, when he describes the Tic Tac, even hardened skeptics tend to start with “he believes what he’s saying.”
Who he is
Fravor was the commanding officer of strike-fighter squadron VFA-41 (“Black Aces”) flying F/A-18F Super Hornets. On November 14, 2004, during a workup exercise with the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group off Southern California, he was vectored to investigate radar contacts the cruiser USS Princeton had been tracking for days.
What he reported finding became the [[2004-nimitz-tic-tac]] encounter: a smooth, white, wingless object about 40 feet long, hovering over a disturbance in the ocean, which mirrored his approach and then accelerated away faster than anything in his experience.
Why he matters
Fravor is the human anchor of the single most important modern case. His account is not a fleeting glimpse: he and his wingman, Alex Dietrich, plus their two weapons systems officers, observed the object for several minutes in clear daylight — four trained aircrew, corroborated by multiple radar systems and, on a later flight, the FLIR1 video.
He has been notably measured about it. Fravor declines to claim the object was extraterrestrial; he says only that it outperformed any known aircraft and that he cannot explain it. That restraint is part of his credibility. In July 2023 he testified under oath before a House Oversight subcommittee alongside Ryan Graves and David Grusch, telling Congress plainly what he saw.
His significance is simple and large: he is the reason the Tic Tac cannot be dismissed as a sensor glitch or a hoax. A government can argue about a video. It has a harder time arguing with a sober, decorated fighter pilot who looked at the thing with his own eyes and has never wavered — and never embellished — in the two decades since.
