The USS Nimitz "Tic Tac" Encounter

Also known as: Tic Tac UFO, Nimitz 2004, FLIR1, Nimitz incident

In November 2004, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group tracked a wingless, fast-moving object off Southern California. The gun-camera video the Pentagon eventually confirmed is still the case everything else gets measured against.

If the modern UFO story has a Patient Zero, this is it. Strip away the podcasts, the congressional hearings, the merch — and you keep coming back to a clear November day off the coast of Baja, a veteran fighter pilot, and an object that did not behave like anything either side of the encounter could explain.

What happened

In mid-November 2004, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group was running a pre-deployment workup exercise in the Pacific, southwest of San Diego. For about a week, operators aboard the cruiser USS Princeton had been tracking unidentified returns on the ship’s advanced AN/SPY-1 radar — objects appearing at high altitude, then descending tens of thousands of feet in seconds before hovering low over the water.

On November 14, two F/A-18F Super Hornets from strike-fighter squadron VFA-41 were vectored to investigate. One was flown by then-Commander David Fravor, the squadron’s commanding officer, with his weapons systems officer; the other by a pilot who has since spoken publicly only as “Source.” Below them, Fravor reported, the ocean was churning over a shallow area — and above the disturbance sat a smooth, white object with no wings, no rotors, and no visible exhaust, roughly the size and shape of a Tic Tac breath mint, perhaps 40 feet long.

Fravor descended to engage. The object, he says, mirrored his movements, then accelerated away faster than anything he had seen in nearly two decades of flying. Minutes later it reappeared at the aircraft’s pre-briefed rendezvous point — about 60 miles away — as if it had simply skipped the distance.

A follow-on flight captured the now-famous infrared footage: roughly 90 seconds of forward-looking infrared (FLIR) video showing a warm, featureless object that, at the clip’s end, darts left and out of frame at startling speed. That clip is FLIR1.

Why it matters

For more than a decade the footage circulated in the gray market of UFO forums, its provenance disputed. Then, in December 2017, The New York Times reported on a Pentagon effort called AATIP and published the Nimitz video alongside two others. In April 2020 the Department of Defense took the unusual step of officially releasing the clips and stating they were authentic and “unidentified” — language a government almost never volunteers.

What makes Nimitz the anchor case is the layering of evidence: multiple radar systems, multiple aircrew, and a sensor recording, all converging on the same object. It is not a blurry photograph or a lone witness. It is why, when the Pentagon released its files years later, reporters and officials kept reaching back to a Tic Tac off the California coast.

The skeptical case — sensor artifacts, parallax, misidentified aircraft — has been argued in detail and is not frivolous. But the official acknowledgment that the government cannot explain its own footage is, in the end, the part that changed the conversation.
