Gimbal & GoFast

If Nimitz is the case that opened the door, Gimbal and GoFast are the two clips that walked through it on national television. They are short, grainy, and — crucially — they came with witnesses who said this kind of thing was happening all the time.

What happened

In the years after 2004, Navy F/A-18 crews flying training missions off the Virginia coast began reporting unidentified objects in their operating areas with what several described as alarming regularity. The objects showed up on the upgraded radar and infrared systems the squadrons had recently received. Pilots filed safety reports. A few, including Lieutenant Ryan Graves, later went public about how routine — and how unnerving — the sightings had become.

Two infrared recordings from this period are the ones the public knows:

• Gimbal (recorded January 2015) shows a dark, lozenge-shaped object against a cold sky. As the targeting pod tracks it, the object appears to rotate. On the cockpit audio, aircrew can be heard reacting in real time: “There’s a whole fleet of them… they’re all going against the wind.” Whether the rotation is the object itself or an artifact of the gimballed camera is the heart of the debate — hence the name.
• GoFast (same deployment) shows an object apparently racing low over the ocean. The aircrew sound astonished. Skeptical analysts have argued the geometry actually implies a fairly slow-moving object made to look fast by parallax against the water; defenders dispute the reconstruction. The argument is unresolved and worth understanding in detail.

Why it matters

Gimbal and GoFast were published by The New York Times in December 2017 and officially released by the Department of Defense in April 2020 — the same acknowledgment that covered the Nimitz FLIR1 clip.

What sets the East Coast encounters apart is the frequency and the paper trail. This was not a single dramatic day. It was, according to the aircrew, a persistent presence in active military airspace, serious enough to generate hazard reports and eventually congressional attention. That framing — UAP as a flight-safety and airspace-awareness problem, not a tabloid curiosity — is the one that carried into later government efforts and hearings.

The clips remain genuinely contested on the merits. The honest version is this: the videos are real, the aircrew reactions are real, and the conventional explanations are plausible for some frames and strained for others. That tension is exactly why the cases still matter.
