Christopher Mellon

Also known as: Chris Mellon, Christopher K. Mellon

A former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence who became one of the most credible advocates for taking UAP seriously — and a quiet conduit for the Navy videos reaching the public.

The UFO subject has never had a shortage of enthusiasts. What it long lacked was establishment credibility — someone who had actually sat in the rooms where national-security decisions get made. Christopher Mellon is that person, and his involvement is a large part of why the modern era reads as policy rather than folklore.

Who he is

Mellon served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush, and earlier as minority staff director on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. His résumé is the establishment itself: clearances, oversight responsibility, and decades inside the intelligence bureaucracy.

After leaving government he became convinced that UAP represented a genuine and under-examined security gap — not a question of belief, but of unidentified objects operating in restricted airspace that no agency owned. He joined To The Stars Academy, the venture co-founded by former AATIP official Luis Elizondo and musician Tom DeLonge, lending it institutional gravity.

Why he matters

Mellon’s central contribution was credibility plus access. He has written and spoken extensively, framing UAP consistently as an airspace-awareness and counterintelligence problem — the framing that government has since largely adopted. He played a role in the Navy encounter videos reaching journalists and the public, and in connecting pilots and officials to lawmakers willing to act.

His fingerprints are on the New York Times reporting of December 2017 that revealed [[aatip]], and on the broader push that led to mandated UAP reporting, the 2021 ODNI assessment, and eventually [[aaro]]. He has argued for whistleblower protections and against excessive secrecy — while generally avoiding the most sensational claims, which is exactly what makes him persuasive to skeptics.

Mellon is not a witness to a craft; he is an architect of the process that forced the subject onto the official agenda. In a field crowded with people asking to be believed, his role has been to make sure the question got asked through proper channels — by people who couldn’t easily be waved away.
