The Lake Huron Shootdown

Also known as: Lake Huron object, Lake Huron shootdown, February 2023 shootdown, DOW-UAP-PR071

An F-16 shot down an unidentified octagonal object over Lake Huron in February 2023 — and never recovered it. Years later, gun-camera footage of that engagement became the viral centerpiece of the Pentagon's file release.

Most cases on this site are about objects nobody could catch. This is the rare one where the United States stopped arguing and pulled the trigger — and then couldn’t find what it hit.

What happened

February 2023 was an extraordinary week in North American skies. After a Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon transited the continental U.S. and was shot down off South Carolina on February 4, NORAD dramatically increased its sensitivity to slow, high-flying objects. In the days that followed, U.S. and Canadian fighters downed three more unidentified objects: one over Alaska, one over the Yukon, and — on February 12, 2023 — one over Lake Huron.

The Lake Huron object was described by officials as a slow-moving, octagonal structure with possible dangling lines, flying around 20,000 feet — low enough to pose a potential hazard to civil aviation. An F-16 from the Air National Guard engaged it with an AIM-9X Sidewinder. The first missile reportedly missed; a second brought the object down over the water.

Then the trail went cold. The object fell into the lake and, despite a search, was never recovered. No government has publicly identified what it was. Officials suggested the three post-balloon objects may have been benign — possibly commercial or hobbyist balloons — but conceded they did not know, because they had nothing to examine.

Why it matters

This is the case that collapses the usual distance between “phenomenon” and “policy.” A pilot looked at an unidentified object over American-adjacent airspace and was cleared to destroy it. The decision chain ran straight to the top. And the outcome — a confirmed engagement with no recovered hardware and no public identification — is a near-perfect illustration of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) problem set: too many unknowns in the airspace, and too little ability to resolve them after the fact.

A note on framing. The verifiable facts above are the real February 2023 event. The reason it reappears across this site’s 2026 dispatches is the publication’s ongoing storyline around a Pentagon “Release 02” file drop — including gun-camera infrared catalogued as DOW-UAP-PR071 — which made the Lake Huron engagement viral all over again. Where this site narrates that release, it is reporting on its own beat; the underlying shootdown is a matter of public record.
